How much is enough water?

May 9, 2012

Lora Ulrich and The New You Lifestyle are all about helping you create a happier, healthier life and body. We recently blogged about the importance of drinking water and decided today was a good day to follow-up on that blog with some more important information for you. We did some more digging to see how much is enough water and why… read on!

How much water should you drink every day? We did some asking around and found out that the old standby of eight glasses a day still holds. Here’s what you might not already know: If you don’t drink enough water, the greatest effect may not be physical–its mental and emotional. Drink just half the recommended amount of water and you’ll likely suffer from mild dehydration. You’ll also have less energy, and you won’t be able to concentrate and focus as you normally would.

If you do exercise and sweat a lot, then you need more than eight glasses to properly hydrate your body. Our bodies need water, primarily because water makes up more than 70 percent of solid body tissue. It helps regulate body temperature, carries nutrients and oxygen to cells, removes waste, cushions joints, and protects organs and tissues, explains Reuters. Too little water can cause headaches, grogginess, and dry, itchy skin. When we become severely dehydrated, it can affect our blood pressure, circulation, digestion, kidney function, and nearly all body processes.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT NOT DRINKING WATER

  • 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. (This likely applies to half the world’s population).
  • In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
  • Even MILD dehydration will slow down one’s metabolism as much as 3%.
  • One glass of water shuts down midnight hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters investigated in a University of Washington study.
  • Lack of water is the #1 trigger of daytime fatigue.
  • Preliminary research indicates that 8-10 glasses of water a day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
  • A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on a printed page.
  • Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50% less likely to develop bladder cancer.

QUESTION: Are you drinking the amount of water you should every day?

Dr. Oz and USANA

April 9, 2012

USANA Health Sciences recently joined forces with HealthCorps, the nonprofit organization co-founded by heart surgeon and Emmy Award-winning talk show host Dr. Mehmet Oz and his wife, Lisa, to combat one of the most serious health issues facing the United States today: childhood obesity.

The nutritional company committed to further HealthCorps’ goals of educating children about nutrition and fitness. “One of the reasons we chose to donate to HealthCorps is because we share such similar values,” said USANA CEO Dave Wentz. “Our common mission is to create a healthier world for future generations, while helping people make better decisions today. It’s impressive to see how HealthCorps is impacting people’s lives.”

HealthCorps is dedicated to fighting childhood obesity by educating students, challenging teens to create healthier environments and advocating for healthy public policy. “Approximately 12.5 million American children and adolescents, ages 2 to 19 years, are obese,” said Dr. Oz. “In New York State alone, obesity among children and adolescents has tripled over the last three decades. This is among the many issues that HealthCorps is committed to address, and with USANA’s generosity, we are able to do much more with our programs.”

The two organizations kicked off their collaboration on Feb. 23 with a “Teen Battle Chef” cooking competition at Columbia University where high school students prepared healthy dishes for a panel of judges that included celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito, Dr. Oz, Lisa Oz, Dave Wentz and USANA Founder Dr. Myron Wentz. A Health and Happiness Summit wellness event hosted by Dr. Oz was held on Feb. 25 at Radio City Music Hall. Click here to read the full press release.

Exclusive Video! Watch as Dr. Oz, Dr. Myron Wentz, and Dave Wentz discuss USANA’s dedication to health and how it led to the partnership between USANA and HealthCorps. Dr. Oz and Dr. Wentz and Dave also talk about customizing for your personal needs. CLICK ON THE VIDEO BELOW TO VIEW

Sanoviv and Dr. Wentz

April 3, 2012

I recently blogged about my wonderful visit Sanoviv this past February 2012. I hadn’t been there since 2006 so I was so excited to get to visit again. Sanoviv Medical Institute, a licensed hospital, combines cutting-edge diagnostics, nutrition, detoxification & medical treatments. Sanoviv, derived from the Spanish words “healthy living”, provides your mind, body and spirit with a toxic-free environment to restore your health.

My trip was a combination of business & personal medical program with my husband. The first five days was a health education retreat where I learned more about digestion and detoxification. Today I decided to share a little about Sanoviv and Dr. Went – the founder of this amazing place! Click here to read more about my trip.

Experience Real Wellness

Sanoviv Medical Institute, a licensed hospital, is for anyone that wants to enjoy better health and a more vital life. Sanoviv embodies clean living and provides the healthiest environment for the mind, body and spirit to heal. Whether you have a serious health issue or want to ensure continued good health, Sanoviv is the place for you.

Sanoviv, derived from the Spanish words “healthy living”, provides your mind, body and spirit with a toxic-free environment to restore your health. Sanoviv has created a unique standard of quality, excellence and cleanliness never before seen in medical care.

Sanoviv is the first medical facility to be certified in Functional Medicine by the Institute of Functional Medicine. The majority of our health care professionals (Physicians, Dentists, Psychologists, Chiropractors and Nutritionists) went through intense training to achieve this.

Our staff is committed to treating you as a whole being, focusing on your biochemical individuality and the underlying factors causing your health issues, not just your symptoms. We apply an integration of the best in modern medicine combined with holistic and alternative therapies to find that which works for you. When you visit us for one of our treatment programs, you will undergo a series of diagnostic tests, including many that are not available in the U.S. or Canada. The doctors will then draw on a range of conventional and alternative treatment options to develop a comprehensive program specifically tailored to your individual needs.

Dr. Wentz, Founder of Sanoviv

Myron Wentz, PhD, founded Sanoviv Medical Institute based on a new approach to healing the world of debilitating disease. Sanoviv embodies clean living and provides the healthiest environment for the body to heal, but the most important factor in Dr. Wentz’s vision is a truly integrated approach to assessing and treating each guest according to their biochemical individuality. He felt it was important to focus on the whole person, while incorporating the fields of Medicine, Energy Medicine, Psychology, Nutrition, Dentistry, Chiropractic, Fitness and Body Work into the guest’s healing journey. Under his guidance, Sanoviv has developed a treatment modality that weaves these different health disciplines together to synergistically heal body, mind and spirit.

At the beginning of his biomedical career, Dr. Wentz gained renown for creating diagnostic tests for viral diseases, including the Epstein-Barr and Herpes Simplex Viruses. As a scientist and microbiologist, Dr. Wentz determined that if a cell is simply given the best environment in which to live and grow, it will thrive indefinitely. He resolved to apply his expertise in cellular culture to help as many people as possible enjoy life-long good health.

In 1992, Dr. Wentz created USANA Health Sciences in order to develop, manufacture and distribute an elite family of the highest quality of nutritional products. As USANA grew into a successful company, providing top grade nutritional supplements, Dr. Wentz wanted to combine optimal nutrition with cutting-edge wellness therapies to further counter degenerative disease. His next step was creating a Mecca for wellness – Sanoviv Medical Institute, a state-of-the-art facility that represents the hope for the future of medicine and healing, a place where the body, mind and spirit are nourished.

At Sanoviv, you have a wonderful opportunity to experience the results of the vision of a great pioneer in the health field and to experience what healing should be, now and in the foreseeable future.

My Trip to Sanoviv

March 26, 2012

I was so excited to visit Sanoviv again in February 2012, hadn’t been there since 2006.

A few tips:

  • Chew your food. Proper chewing is one of the easiest ways to improve our digestion. Do you chew 30-50 times per bite? Oh my, I don’t know about you but this reminder hit me hard. We are always in such a rush that most people barely chew their food. It was amazing to me that it took a few days to get used to eating more slowly. I must admit, eating is a more pleasurable experience when I slow down.
  • Gut Health. 90% of all nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine. Damage to our gut can be a root cause of many chronic health conditions such as food allergies and autoimmune conditions. We can correct or prevent damage by removing the offenders, replacing with fiber and digestive enzymes, adding probiotics and commit to consistent digestive support.
  • BREATHE. Wow you would think this would be an easy one. I am talking about proper belly breathing. Most of us breathe very shallow during the day especially when we are busy or stressed. It takes practice, I know as I continue to work on this, to develop and maintain proper breathing habits. Take a few moments right now to concentrate on breathing in with your belly rising and then out while your belly goes down. Just 5 minutes a day can make you feel more refreshed and energetic.
  • Detoxify. It is so important to take time out to detoxify our bodies from the stress, toxins, and certain foods we eat and unplug from technology. It is amazing how good you can feel after only a few days. I must admit the unplugging from technology was a little stressful at first lol.

Here are a few simple tips to you can do at home:

  • Body brushing – using a soft, long-handled brush, take seven minutes to brush your skin with smooth strokes, always brushing toward the heart
  • Observing one liquid-only day each week, whether or not you are actively detoxing
  • Drinking green juice as your snack once or twice a day
  • Choosing Brazil nuts each day as a source of selenium
  • Eating or drinking a healthy probiotic supplement (we recommend USANA) at least three times per week to support healthy digestion (do not mix the probiotics with anything hot, as that may kill the good bacteria before it can help your body)
  • Foot and hand massages at least weekly – do it yourself or trade with a partner.
  • Drinking at least 64 ounces of clean water daily
  • Eating water-rich fruit (especially melons and citrus) alone, without any other foods, so your body can more easily digest them.
  • Staying away from granulated sugar and chemical substitutes
  • Deep, rounded belly breathing
  • Wearing organic cotton or bamboo clothing that allow your skin to breathe.
  • Getting a full night’s sleep – every night.  If you need assistance relaxing, we recommend deep breathing, meditation, and USANA’s PureRest

Taking time to take care of ourselves is so important. I had lots of time to reflect while at Sanoviv. I met so many wonderful people from all over the world during my 13 day stay. It is truly amazing to see people’s health improve simply after a few days of eating organic food, de-stressing in a non-toxic environment – and that is before any treatments!! Seeing the changes in my hubby already these past few months is a blessing as well. His digestion is improved, he has lost 16 pounds in a month and is more committed to living a healthy lifestyle. Whewee it’s about time.

I left Sanoviv with an even deeper passion and purpose to provide people with all the pieces of the puzzle to help them reach their health & wellness goals. Soooo many people are frustrated and looking for answers to improve their health, increase their energy or reach their desired weight. I am forever greatly to Dr. Wentz for improving my health, changing my life, and providing me with the tools to make a difference.

Are you drinking enough water?

March 22, 2012

Lora Ulrich and The New You Lifestyle are all about helping you create a happier, healthier life and body. Lately we’ve been blogging about healthy eating, healthy lifestyle choices, having enough energy throughout the day and here’s something very important – water! We love sharing valuable information that can help you make those simple lifestyle changes that create significant improvements. Did you know that on average about 60 percent of the human body is made up of water? Drinking enough water every day is extremely important. We did a little digging to see what the experts are saying about water… read on!

Water – How Much is More Important Than When.

Great info from Sue Ward, Certified Nutritionist, Sanoviv Medical Institute.

– 1 glass of water upon rising (we recommend room temperature water with the juice of 1/2 a fresh lemon with a few shakes of cayenne pepper)

– Plenty of water throughout the day (especially in hot weather or when exercising)

– Limit water with meals (too much water with a meal or too close to a meal may interfere with or dilute digestive enzymes)

The bottom line is, not enough water will always be a problem to all body systems. Chronic dehydration is a big problem. It is MUCH more important to be sure you take in enough water than it is to worry about scheduling drinks at a specific time.

We also recommend drinking pure water (filtered tap water is our first choice) and a Reverse Osmosis filter would be a good choice (be sure to add ¼ teaspoon of Unrefined Celtic Salt or Himalayan salt per gallon to put back some essential minerals). Drinking bottled water? Read our thoughts on bottled water – click here.

And for those of you who read your way to good health, we recommend Your Body’s Many Cries for Water by Dr. Batmanghelidj

Basically – You create healthy!

February 24, 2012

So our favorite topic of the month has been HEALTHY LIVING! In the past three blogs we have been discussing healthy eating, maintaining our energy levels and losing weight the right way!  The New You Lifestyle is all about helping you get on a successful path to a healthier life and we want to not only help you understand it but walk the walk too!

So what does all this mean?

To have an enriching & healthy life, fitness is a must. Good eating is part of that fitness springboard that makes bigger things possible. If you’re starving your body, depriving it of what it needs, you’re handicapping yourself in the race for your dreams. And if you’re filling it with garbage, don’t expect much in return. This all may seem obvious, but too many people sabotage themselves by ignoring that simple fact. Truth is, food-good food in the right combinations at the right time – is the thing that makes everything else possible. Improving your health, increasing your energy, reaching your ideal weight or maintaining a healthy weight are all directly impacted by your nutrition.

The New You Lifestyle provides tailored nutrition, fitness and motivational classes, seminars & workshops for individuals, groups and businesses, which empower you to achieve your health and fitness goals. We provide a very personalized service – we listen, to your needs, wants and desires. Your goal becomes our focus and we work together to achieve short-term results AND long-term results.
